Our Band Students Rock!

I am so proud of our 6th grade band students. They have been staying after school on Tuesdays and Fridays every week this year to learn how to play a new instrument. It is obvious that their hard work has paid off based on their performance at their first concert last night. Listen to these kids play!

Keep up the great work! I'm looking forward to following your band progress through middle school and high school.

Hip Hip Hooray!!

This month Mrs. Dessert and Ms. Kolstad are very excited to announce their "Students of the Month"-Jose G. and Kevin L. We are so proud of all of our students, but these two were outstanding in the month of November.

We are proud to present Jose with the Student of the Month for Mrs. Dessert's class. Jose has received 100% on his last two math tests, and has become a leader in his new advanced math group. He is a good role model and teammate, and has successfully completed all his inclass assignments and homework assignments. This determination and work ethic will take him far! Keep up the great work Jose!

Kevin is an outstanding student from Ms. Kolstad's class. He is a student with strong skills and a great work ethic. He always completes and turns in every assignment. Kevin does the best he can on each lesson he has. He is a captain of the Green Team recycling group. Kevin also helps out with computers in the classroom. He has all the qualities we look for in outstanding students.

WAY TO GO JOSE AND KEVIN! We are looking forward to showcasing many of our other wonderful students this year. Keep up the great work 6th graders!

Preparation for Conferences

With conferences right around the corner next week, on Monday November 18th and Tuesday the 19th, we wanted to share a few resources with you to better understand some of the new standards and way of teaching and learning we have been implementing.

One major change we have begun implementing is the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in reading and math. Please watch the following short video to better understand the direction of teaching and learning in the Hillsboro School District, as well as much of the country.

During conferences we will be presenting you with more information about the sixth grade standards your child will be expected to learn this year. Please come with any questions you may have to better understand how this change is taking place this year and how it will affect your child.

We are looking forward to meeting with all of our wonderful parents and students during your conference time. We only have 20 minutes per conference this year, so please show up on time so we can make the most of our conference time.

*Please also take a moment to take the poll on the right side of your screen about math homework. Please let us know how your child is feeling about their math homework, and feel free to leave a comment to let us know how we can help.*

Math Facts Practice

As we have begun using our new CPM (College Prep Math) program, we are noticing that some kids still don't have their basic multiplication facts mastered or memorized, which is making many of our current lessons much more difficult than they need to be for students.
Please take some time this weekend to dust off the old flashcards, or try some of these fun games online to help your child practice. We are asking that they practice at least 10 minutes every night until they can do them automatically.
Thank you for working together with us to help your child be successful!
